What Is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is inflammation of the tendons connecting your forearm muscles to the outside of your elbow.

Despite the name, many people develop tennis elbow without ever playing tennis. It’s often a result of repetitive overuse, such as gripping a tennis racket, swinging a golf club, or curling a dumbbell, which creates micro-tears in the tendon tissue over time.

Usual symptoms include burning or aching pain over the outer elbow, weakened grip strength, and discomfort that worsens with activity.

Mild cases of tennis elbow can be treated by combining the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation), targeted stretching, and elbow supports and straps. In more severe cases, your healthcare provider may recommend physical therapy or surgery to restore full strength and mobility.

How Braces and Straps Provide Tennis Elbow Relief

A well-designed, medical-grade elbow brace or strap helps alleviate tennis elbow symptoms by redistributing load on the tendon and improving circulation to support healing.

Counterforce straps, such as the Sports Elbow Strap and EpiPoint, sit just below the elbow to provide adjustable support that redistributes pressure from the lateral epicondyle. Compression-based braces, like the Sports Elbow Support and EpiTrain, use targeted compression to improve circulation and reduce pain, stiffness, and swelling.

A combined approach — wearing a compression brace for daily support and a counterforce strap during activity — can also be helpful. Whichever you choose, consistency matters most.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What’s the difference between tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow?

Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow are both caused by repetitive stress on the elbow, leading to pain and swelling. However, tennis elbow occurs on the outside of the elbow, while golfer’s elbow occurs on the inside of the elbow.

Symptoms of tennis elbow include pain, stiffness, and swelling, which can lead to a weakened grip, a burning sensation, or pain with hand rotation. Symptoms of golfer’s elbow also include pain and stiffness and can result in tingling and numbness in the fingers.

Although one is termed “tennis elbow” and the other “golfer’s elbow,” you can still experience golfer’s elbow from tennis and tennis elbow from golf. The moniker stems from lateral epicondylitis, which often affects tennis players, and medial epicondylitis, which often affects golfers.

Bauerfeind’s tennis elbow braces and straps, such as the Sports Elbow Support and Sports Elbow Strap, are anatomically designed and most effective when worn correctly.

The Sports Elbow Support features dual massage pads on each side of the elbow, with an opening designed to sit around the medial and lateral epicondyle. The Sports Elbow Strap has a five-point massage pad that should be positioned 1 to 2 inches below the elbow, on your upper forearm. Each support should feel comfortably snug and secure without restricting circulation.

Yes! Bauerfeind’s tennis elbow supports are machine washable, and we recommend washing them regularly in cold/cool water on the gentle or delicate cycle, then laying them flat to air-dry, as this will help maintain their fit, comfort, and effectiveness.

It’s fine to wash using regular laundry detergent, but please avoid using additives (such as fabric softener or Woolite), as this can damage the knit fabric. Additionally, make sure to securely fasten any straps using the area provided on the brace.

We also recommend using our Mesh Washing Bag for additional protection and care when washing. For more information, please visit Bauerfeind’s Product Care Guide.

Many of Bauerfeind’s back braces, including the LumboTrain and SacroLoc, are eligible for reimbursement through most FSAs (Flexible Spending Accounts) and HSAs (Health Savings Accounts). View our HSA/FSA-eligible products for more information.

Additionally, because FSA/HSA plans vary, we recommend contacting your employer or plan administrator to confirm eligibility and reimbursement before purchase.

We offer a 60-day money-back guarantee on all orders purchased at Bauerfeind.us, regardless of the reason for return.

All returns must be in original packaging and received in like-new condition, and credits for returns are issued in the original form of payment. To learn more, please visit Bauerfeind’s Return Policy.
